About LEDs

What is an LED ?
An LED is a Light Emitting Diode. This is a semi-conductor which transmits light when electricity is passed through it. It is a form of SSL (Solid State Lighting) technology, meaning it is robust, long lasting, emits no UV or IR and runs at low heat.
LEDs fall into two separate categories: LED lamps and LED luminaires
LED lamps are easily retrofitted. LED luminaires need to be installed by qualified electricians.

Why use LEDs now ?
LEDs are lighting efficient. They should be considered as part of the overall efficiency scheme for any building.
They save money by reducing running costs and electricity.
They contain little (effectively no) toxic or hazardous materials.
They are extremely bright and easily equate in lighting output to many traditional halogen, CFL and incandescent lights.
LED lamps fit the vast majority of current lighting fittings and wiring although these should be checked prior to installation.
They can be dimmable and controllable.
LED luminaires can replace whole existing fittings or be installed as new whole fittings. Dimmable and easily controlled, they are highly efficient and powerful.

Where do Greenled LEDs come from ?
We source our LEDs mainly from UK, USA or European manufacturers.
We do not manufacture our own LEDs.
We are the official distributors in UK for several leading LED lamp and luminaire producers.
All our LEDs are independently tested.

Our experience
Please see our Case studies page for more details.

Which applications do LEDs suit ?
LED Lamps suit directional lighting tasks best -
narrow beam downlighting and up-lighting, spot lighting, specific task / amenity lighting, kitchen lighting and some general lighting.
LED luminaires suit general lighting tasks best -
rooms, corridors, spaces, offices, exterior lighting. They are ideal for lighting which is located at heights or in spaces which are difficult to get at.

Because the L70 rated life of most LED lighting is above 35,000 hours, once installed they do not need to be maintained or changed regularly, as is the case with traditional lighting.

Compared to traditional lighting the longer they are on, the more efficient they are.

What light output and performance levels ?
Light output is measured in lumens (lm) and efficiency is measured in lumens per watt (lm/W). Most UK standards require a minimum efficiency of 40 lm/W (likely to increase in October 2010).
All Greenled lights have a Spec Sheet which sets out the important relevant criteria such as wattage, lumen output, lm/W, power factor, rated life, dimmability, connector, voltage, colour temperature, beam angle together with IES file information. Please ask for further information as required.
