As part of its campaign to reduce energy costs and install energy-efficient equipment, the management of a popular pub in St Albans, Hertfordshire, invited Greenled to light its backroom areas.
After surveying all the lighting in the pub, Greenled installed 88 of their 3.7 Watt Antares downlighters in place of 50 Watt dichroics throughout the pub’s toilets, back corridors and behind-the-bar areas.

Since the LED installation, measured savings have proved considerably higher than anticipated, thanks to the subsequent reduction in air conditioning usage. Because Greenled LEDs are so efficient, they emit very little heat, meaning further savings are possible. The management has seen an 8% decrease in total energy consumption, equating to a cost saving of nearly £2,400 per year.

Greenled has also identified that by replacing all 22 of the pub’s 500 Watt interior beam spotlights with 36 Watt lights from its Ascella range, the pub’s management could save over a further 60,000 kW/hrs or £5,500 per year – a reduction of 21% of their entire energy bill and just enough to buy a round of drinks! –

To inspire the social housing sector to implement low carbon technologies in the refurbishment of their ageing housing stock, renowned London-based environmental architect, Mark Elton of ECD invited Greenled to install sustainable low-energy LED lighting across a social housing site in Court Farm Road, Mottingham, south east London.
The installation was part of a pilot project for Hyde Housing Association, and results have been very positive. Using Greenled LED lamps, a three bedroom terrace house, with en suite bathroom and kitchen, was lit by Greenled LEDs using only 171 Watts! This is an energy saving of over 2000 kWh per year and a tonne of carbon every four years. The finished site is now open, and as the attached article from the Telegraph shows it certainly is showing the way.

Greenled has successfully installed the Marriott Hotel Group’s first dimmable lighting system using LEDs – in the stylish bar area of the newly refurbished Marriott Heathrow Airport.
Inspired by a successful trial at the Marriott hotel in Marble Arch, Marriott’s regional manager for London invited Greenled to design and install bright and sustainable lighting in the hotel bar.
The area proved to be an ideal location for the first ever installation of Greenled’s new dimmable LED downlighter system, which easily replaced the existing halogen lighting, and uses only a fraction of the energy output. A total of 76 dimmable Antares downlighters have now been installed and are controlled using a Lutron Grafik Eye and Lutron DMX interface system, to allow four pre-programmed settings for various lighting looks. The hotel bar opened for business in August 2008 |

The level of interest Greenled received at Energy Solutions Expo, held at London Olympia in October, was clear evidence of a genuine interest in the benefits offered by LED lighting.
Why was this? The rising cost of energy has a serious impact and an increasing number of businesses continue to explore ways to reduce overheads. Enquiries came not only from CSR/energy management and carbon reduction specialists, but also from a large number of facilities managers; particularly those working in hospitality, looking for an alternative to halogen lighting.
Unlike halogens, LEDs convert energy straight to light, resulting in running cost savings of up to 90% on standard energy bills. Thanks to careful component selection and engineering, Greenled LEDs are able to produce the same light quality as halogen bulbs, but reduce energy consumption by up to 75%.
“Although our mission is to deliver safe, economically and environmentally-viable lighting using LEDs, we realise that in economically uncertain times, immediate cost-savings are required,” says James Millar, Greenled’s MD. “LEDs are now justifiably more efficient, safer, longer lasting and better at using energy than other lighting technologies; it’s as simple as that.”

Greenled has introduced the Regulus LED; an energy efficient 7 Watt lamp. A direct replacement for a 50 Watt Halogen downlighter, the Regulus is a low heat, low energy, dimmable LED available in kit form, complete with an intelligent remote control system and a PIR detector with in-remote receiver – that turns off the light if no movement is detected. A universal dimmable driver will soon be available that will work with existing electronic dimmer units, giving maximum flexibility for retro-fits.
Like all Greenled LEDs, Regulus takes its name from a star – one of the brightest in the night sky, located in the Leo constellation, approximately 77.5 light years from Earth’s Solar System. |

With environmental awareness at an all time high in the Republic of Ireland, Greenled is working with a group of architects, specifiers and developers on the innovative Watermint apartment development, located close to Cabinteely Park, eight miles from the centre of Dublin.
The Watermint development is a collection of 13 apartments built using energy-efficient features, including over 400 Greenled LED lamps and is the first building to have ever been awarded Ireland’s much-coveted A1 rating for environmental development under the new Building Energy Rating (BER) regime. Dublin architecture practice, DMOD, was responsible for obtaining planning permission for the development, and sustainable building services consultancy, Conservation Engineering, has been responsible for specifying the development’s sustainable features. The company’s Operations Director, Niall Coughlan has been working closely with Greenled.
“The Greenled lamps complement the other sustainable products in the development very well indeed,” he explains. “An investment has been made in low energy products that offer future tenants a credible commodity.”
A tenant in a standard 90 sq ft two-bedroom Watermint apartment using tungsten bulbs can expect an annual lighting energy bill of €130, while the same unit using Greenled LEDs can expect to pay only €40 a year – a 75% saving. Building work completed in November 2008.

The great challenge in promoting Greenled lights is that almost all of the people we contact are suspicious that Greenled’s lights will look like all the other LEDs they come across – weedy with a blue light. Two of Greenled’s leading Sustainable Lighting Specialists; Paul Haines and Paul Stearman; have recently taken innovative steps to illustrate that Greenled’s lights are genuine replacements for the energy munchers we are used to.
Paul H met with the Health and Safety Officer of a large hotel group. Paul stayed the night in one of their hotels prior to the morning meeting. Rising early, he changed the existing halogen lighting in the bedroom to Greenled LEDs and then held the meeting in the room! Paul mentioned nothing. “What is the light like?” queried the suspicious potential client. “You have been under it for ten minutes,” replied Paul.
This obviously proves how sympathetic the light is and also how quickly and easily the lights can be changed.
Further south, Paul S met with the energy manager of a large pub chain, in a fast-food outlet belonging to the company in order to carry out a lighting trial. Being early for the meeting, Paul duly exchanged over 30 fittings before it started.
With Greenled LEDs lighting the main area, the opening words of the energy manager were: “So what time do you think you’ll be able to start?”
This was music to his ears.
“Erm …I’ve done it already. I’ve finished,” Paul replied, quietly chuffed, as this satisfied one of the primary objectives of the trial – the qualitative light assessment. The fact no change was detected was the best compliment he could have provided.
Both chains are now discussing roll-out plans. Talk about ‘above and beyond’ the call of duty!
