Expansion

Greenled has broadened its reach in two distinct ways this year. Firstly in a maturing market it is delighted to have signed new UK distributorship agreements for the PhotonStarLED and Array ranges from leading high-tech LED manufacturers. Secondly it has opened up a new sales agency with Solas Lights for Life to reach projects in Scotland, see King’s Manor Hotel story.

“It is becoming clear” says MD James Millar “that in replacing traditional halogens with effective LED lighting, LED lights divide into two distinct applications: those suited to providing general illuminance (high lumen output, higher wattage, high efficacy, wide beams) and those suited to providing more defined lighting such as spotlights and tasklights (high lumen output, high efficacy, narrow beams). We have chosen to work with PhotonStar and Array because of their thinking on this. PhotonStar’s 7W and 10W CS luminaire range perform to very high levels (520 and 670 lm), as do their high-powered 14W and 20W Laser range (960, 1110 lm) – all far more efficient (> 50 lm/W) and effective than replacement lamps for general illumination tasks such as corridors, gyms and reception rooms. Equally, for more defined tasks, such as retail, we are delighted to be working with the Array range of high-performance dimmable 3W spotlights (180, 190 lm) – which work so well (> 50 lm/W) as a simpler retrofit option.”

PhotonStarLED

PhotonStarLED is one of the UK’s brightest LED manufacturers and brings a highly sophisticated range of maintenance-free, easy to install, world-class LED white lighting luminaires to Greenled’s already expansive offering of products and services.

PhotonStarLED leads the field in efficient long-lasting, high performance reliable luminaires based on its own patented technology. Using its own designs to maximise lifetimes and performance, the majority of its products are made from recycled materials and are 100% recyclable at end of life.

The lead product is the CS5 7W LED luminaire – a GU10 replacement proven to be 5 times more efficient than a traditional halogen and almost twice as efficient as an 11W CFL. It is twice as efficient as other 7W GU10 lamps on the market in a similar fitting, offering an 80,000 hour life and a genuine proven “fit and forget” illumination solution. There are another ten equally high performing products in the range.

PhotonStarLED have also developed the first genuinely equivalent LED replacement for 50W halogen MR16s in terms of lumen output, on axis brightness, dimensions and aesthetics.

PhotonStarLED products not only offer savings in power consumption, but each product is designed and manufactured to give a truly sustainable solution. The full life cycle has low embedded carbon due to its local manufacture from 85% recycled materials. It contains no toxins or hazardous substances offering a fully recyclable solution.

IES files, photometric data, alternative bezel colours and fittings are all available and PhotonStarLED products are backed with a 5 year guarantee with the majority of products offering 50 lumens per circuit watt and several offering considerably more.

Array

Greenled is now an approved distributor of Array lights - the revolutionary brand of lightweight MR16s and PAR LEDs from leading American LED manufacturer Nexxus Lighting. Its patent-pending Selective Heat Sink Technology™ system means its lamps only need a low drive of power to perform efficiently, furthering sustainability without compromising efficacy.

The Array range, which meets UK and US regulations and minimum ECA criteria, is dimmable and is already installed in several high-end UK retailers including specific areas of Debenhams and Harrods. In addition to low energy usage, the lights come in recycled plastic housing for enhanced environmental benefits. L70 rated life is 50,000 hours and all products carry a 3 year warranty.

Solas Lights for Life

Greenled is delighted to announce the opening of a satellite office in Scotland to handle all Scottish projects. With several years of experience in LED lighting already, Stephen Brockbank is already taking the Greenled message to hotels, retail outlets and visitor centres across Scotland.

Project Delivery: the old with the new

In addition to its hospitality and retail projects, Greenled has been working with universities and councils across the UK. At Manchester University the Museum has recently “Greenleded” its Grand Hall to great effect. Meanwhile in Tetbury, Greenled’s home town, the new “LED by Tetbury” initiative illustrates how all types of business can benefit from LEDs and really reduce costs.

Manchester University

Manchester University: Manchester City Museum, part of Manchester University, has committed to a modern lighting approach by adopting cutting edge Greenled lamps to light up its Grand Hall, which displays some of the city’s collection of ancient artefacts and specimens.

The Museum was looking for energy efficient lighting which would meet the task of illuminating the historical artefacts on display without causing damage to the collections. After seeing the trials and recognising that LEDs do not emit ultra-violet light, LED lighting was the obvious choice. The installation is already cutting the carbon footprint and saving the Museum a significant amount of money in electricity and maintenance bills. The LEDs provide an attractive light output and the university has already commissioned Greenled to light a second building.

Following final measurements, full details of the Museum project will be up on the Greenled website shortly. For more information on other Greenled lighting projects click here (to go through to Greenled’s case study page)

LED by Tetbury

The Cotswold market town of Tetbury, home to Greenled Lights and adjacent to the Royal Highgrove estate, is illustrating how energy-efficiency can work across a community by converting to LED lights. The juxtaposition of ultra efficient lighting with the antiquity of the town is proving popular. 14 separate sets of premises are already lit up and further projects are in the pipeline.

“This is an exciting development, as it demonstrates the range of lighting tasks that LEDs can now successfully handle,” says Will Morgan, project manager “The premises we have lit include offices, hotels, retail outlets and private houses”. The project has so far seen a decrease in electricity of around 12,000 kWh. Average savings are approximately 10% of the overall electricity bill, equating in energy savings terms to around £10 per lamp. 6 tonnes of C02 emissions have been cut off the town’s collective carbon footprint.

Christmas is also set to be an LED event with Greenled adding to the festive cheer by lighting up trees on the town green.

LEDs fit for a King

KINGS MANOR HOTEL CASE STUDY

Les Solley, owner of the family-run Best Western King's Manor Hotel on the outskirts of Edinburgh, had been looking to replace high energy halogen lamps in multiple areas of the hotel to reduce costs and carbon emissions.

King's Manor worked with Greenled to replace the halogen lights with energy saving LEDs in the bistro and torch lamps at the main entrance. By taking out a Carbon Trust interest free loan, managed by Greenled, the hotel was able to start saving immediately without any expenditure. Due to this success, King's Manor is now working with Greenled to extend the installation to all public areas of the hotel and the older bedrooms.

Kings Manor Bistro

Bistro
In the bistro, lighting is needed 18hrs a day and previously used 26 x 50W halogen lamps for the task. By replacing them with 26 of Greenled’s 9W Regulus LED lamps, energy consumption has been reduced from 8500kWh to 1530kWh per annum, amounting to an impressive 82% energy saving. In monetary terms the installation is now saving the hotel over £700 per annum with a yearly energy cost of just £150 compared to the previous £840 – a dramatic saving.

Additionally due to the long life span of the new lamps, the cost of replacing the frequently blown halogens has been eliminated saving a further £430 a year in maintenance. The total annual saving for the bistro amounts to approximately £1100. With each lamp costing £60 the payback period for the bistro installation will be under 18 months.

“The Regulus are great, the only way you can tell the difference between these and traditional halogens is that the Regulus gives a more even beam pattern when directed at a wall,” commented Brian White, Maintenance Manager at Best Western King's Manor.

Main Entrance Torches

The four high consumption 200W halogen lamps which used to light up the main entrance, were replaced with four 15W LED spot lamps. With the lamps on for 12 hours every night the installation of LEDs reduced energy consumption from an enormous 5000kWh to just 400kWh per annum – a 90% saving. The change is now saving the company £480 a year in energy costs, with an additional saving of £90 in the elimination of replacement bulbs and related maintenance. With each new lamp costing £90 the payback period for the entrance torches will take approximately 8 months.

“We have been looking for a replacement for these high energy lamps for a while,” commented Mr White. “We are delighted with this solution from Greenled which fits the holder almost invisibly.  The light is much more directed as a beam up the wall which I think looks better than the flood of light produced by the halogen lamp.”

Additional Lighting

Greenled is now preparing to install a further 400 LEDs: non-dimming Keid lamps in the corridors and bedrooms, Regulus dimmable lamps in the public areas along with Chara MR16 lamp fittings, Regulus Emergency lights and low profile lamps in other areas of the hotel.

Overall Savings

Once the entire installation is rolled out the total energy consumption is expected to be reduced from 77,000 kWh to 12,000 kWh per annum – an 85% saving - and energy costs are expected to drop from £7,700 to £1,200.

What is more, by avoiding the need to replace over 800 bulbs a year due to the LEDs long life span, the installation will save the hotel a further £3,200 per annum in bulbs and labour, amounting to a combined saving of almost £10,000 annually. Full payback on installation through savings is anticipated in just two years. The Carbon Trust loan, arranged through Greenled, has added significantly to the successful delivery of this project.

2009 Show Highlights

Energy Solutions Expo

At the Energy Solutions Expo at Olympia in October Greenled attracted a high volume of visitors, both to its stand and to its seminar ‘LEDucation: how to select the right LEDs’. This was a jargon free explanation on the technology and its pros and cons and it is now available to view as a PowerPoint presentation.

Energy Expo

At the stand Greenled exhibited some of the very latest LED lighting technology demonstrating good delivery of colour quality and high levels of light output at least equivalent to traditional lighting, with the potential for energy savings of up to 90%.

“The response to the exceptional capabilities of the mixture of downlighters, spotlights, floodlights, wash lighting and exterior lighting on display was hugely positive,” commented James Millar, MD of Greenled. “This was a major event for us. Customers ranging from small hotels to large government departments started to realise that changing to LEDs is not simply about changing a few bulbs, but is a project that requires expertise, knowledgeable advice, financial awareness and high quality products.”
